After a while as a runner, [ profile] aramuin claimed that she would get itchy on days where she was supposed to go running but for whatever reason didn't manage to get out for a run. I won't say that I didn't believe her, because I did, but I don't think I fully understood how that could happen. Until last night...

Yup, last night, I found myself sneaking downstairs for a sneaky cycle. A laptop, a stationary bike, 30 minutes and 11kms later, I felt a little less itchy, and I understood what [ profile] aramuin meant.

Now if only I could sleep through the night without waking myself up by moving my hand in such a way as to have fiery, fiery pain* shoot through it, that would be great.

* De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is a horrible, horrible thing that makes me have pain in places that used to be absolutely fine.  Now, grabbing the sheets to pull them over me results in me waking up screaming in pain - or at the very least biting my lip just in case I wake up [ profile] aramuin .

Exercise is a funny thing.

We need it to be healthy.  Apparently.  Anyone who is even slightly overweight is told this.  However, people who are thin don't get told the same thing.

Society tells us that we should all have gym memberships.  We should be athletic, but not so athletic that we have muscles - because girls shouldn't be physically strong or over-muscled.  God(s) forbid that we outshine our male counterparts.

What a lot of doctors and medical professionals and general society seems to forget is that everyone has a different capacity for exercise.  This little fact seems to sit somewhere outside in the hallway of the medical practices and never manages to sneak into a consulting room.  That's a shame.

I find myself in pain for a high proportion of my awake-time.  This is through no fault of my own - by which I mean it's non-consequential pain.  I haven't pushed myself too far.  I haven't done something stupid.  I wasn't attacked.  I wasn't injured as a result of falling down, falling up, over-reaching.  I am just in pain.  Most days it's manageable.  Most days, I can ignore it to some extent or medicate it down to a level where it is manageable.  However, this does have an impact on my exercise levels.

Take yesterday as an example.  I tried the NHS Couch to 5K (C25K) app to encourage myself to get moving.  It's a simple app which lets you play your own playlist while a voice-over tells you when to walk, run and cool down.  It's predicated on 5 minutes walk to warm up, 60 second runs, 90 second walk to rest.  This 60 / 90 schedule is repeated 9 times to bring it to a 30 minute work out with 5 minute warm up and cool down sessions.

I couldn't complete it.  I managed the warm up.  I managed 3 of the 60 / 90 second intervals and then the pain in my right leg made me tap out.  I did a 5 minute cool down to see if I could relieve the pain just by working through it but I couldn't.  I then did a 2km cycle where my leg wasn't bothering me quite so much.  All that left me with was a bundle of sweaty clothes and the feeling that I failed.

Yes, in my head I know I didn't fail.  That instead it just spoke to a level of fitness that wasn't up to doing 9 intervals.  That doesn't get rid of the feeling though.  So I started turning it on it's head.  I could complete 3 intervals.  Use that as a base.  Can I set up an interval based training session where maybe the rest periods were longer?  Maybe sneak in one extra run?

That's my plan now.  Work up to a level where I can start the C25K.  Work at a comfort level that is appropriate for me.  Who knows.  It may even work!

Day 2 of going to the gym at lunch.

1.75km on the treadmill in 20 minutes.  Managed two runs at 7.5 for 60 seconds each.  The rest was walking at about 5kph.  It wasn't bad but it was really painful.  The entire outside of my right leg just cramped up.  It was supposed to be day 1 of C25K but I didn't get anywhere near the target.

Then, a little time on the stationary bike (6.30 minutes) and covered 2km.  I feel a little better about that actually, but still, I just want to get into a shape that isn't round.  Is that too much to ask.

Tonight will be spent testing interval training apps to see how they work, if they work and if they will work for me.  I need to tailor my gym sessions until I can get up to a reasonable fitness level, and at this point, I'd set that bar at day 1 of C25K completed.

Wow, so yeah.. It's been a little bit of a while since I last used either dreamwidth or livejournal.  I think that needs to change.

JOB:  Left old job that was making me drive around the country and put in mad amounts of distance.  Got new job that started off really good but then turned out to be the job from hell, even worse than the job that had me driving from coast to coast.  I now have another new job.  It is awesome and I have the feeling that this is going to be the one to stick at for the next few years at least.

LIVING: Moved house.  We now live in the House of Wonk, so named because there are no right angles in it.  It's rather an OCD nightmare.  And there are occasionally spiders the size of 50p pieces, which double in size once you include the legs.

WRITING: I haven't written anything significant in quite a while and it's not looking like that is going to change.  :(

MEDICAL: I buggered up my right wrist a while back and now I need an operation on it to unstick the tendon sheath from the tendon.  Still waiting on the letter from the doctor about when surgery is going to be.  I've also had the first of what promises to be many conversations with the doctor about possibly getting a fibromyalgia diagnosis which would explain all the random pain that I've had.

EXERCISE: Yesterday I clocked a rather unimpressive 1km on the treadmill and 3.75km on the stationary bike in about 25 minutes.  I'm going again today and I'm kinda hoping to restart the C25K program.  Just need to be sure to stretch things out first.

Because it has been an actual age since I actually updated this thing...  And because Ara did it and I think it's an awesome idea...

Pick a paragraph (or any passage between... let's say 200 and 600 words) from anything I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

First, a meme:

1. Go to page 77 (or 7) of your current MS Word Doc or similar
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines – sentences or paragraphs – and post them as they’re written.
4. Tag 7 other authors. I never like to pick people to do meme-like things, so if you're reading this, consider yourself tagged!

From The Precipice of Reason, The Edge of Madness (a.k.a. Pirates the Sequel) )

In other related news, Sunday marks the posting date for my History Big Bang (or Pirates 1.5 as I've come to call it).  I'm looking forward to being able to put that aside.  It's been betaed and revised and picked apart and now, I'm ready to get it posted and transferred into the 'done' pile.

In unrelated news, whoever replaced the muscles in my upper back with steel rods, I want moveable muscles back please.  I mean, seriously, it's sore and I can't even stretch it out.  Gits!  Tomorrow, there will be house cleaning and someone will be here to do some gardening.  Also, thinking of getting the Clinique Anti-Blemish pack tomorrow.  Anyone heard anything good or bad about it?

My History Big Bang is done!  Polished, betaed, edited, rebetaed, fixed, betaed one last time and done!

I'm looking forward to posting it on April 1st.

But for everything else, I'm having writers block.  Well, okay that's not accurate.  I'm having non-writing.  I have all the images in my head, I know what order they need to come out in, I have the language but it just won't translate into actual words.  Anyone have any ideas on how to get past it?

Okay, so that's a chapter of Hard Drives and Heartbeats finished.  That only took... 3 weeks.  But I think I found my Adam voice again.  Christ that was tough.

Note to self:  Never assume you can shelve a character.  People will only make you unshelve them later.

Writing has been rather tough recently.  I keep feeling as if I'm bouncing my head off a brick wall.  Nothing that's coming out seems to be good enough for me to not want to delete it.  Add a modicum of writers block on top of that and you've pretty much got what I'm trying to deal with.

In good news, the last few chapters of my History Big Bang are in the beta stage and currently getting demolished so that I can rebuild them into an awesome ending.  It sounds worse than it is.  I have two awesome betas who are helping me to make it the best that it can be and I actually like the story.  Posting date is April 1st, and my artist has just let me see the art.  It's fantastic and I love it to pieces!!

Today's challenge is to finish my chapter of Hard Drives and Heartbeats (the sequel to Silver Bullets and Circuitry) and not devolve into writing the lyrics to Silverfyre's songs.  :)

In news completely unrelated to writing, I've bought Saturday tickets to Sonisphere 2012 in Knebworth and will be seeing Queen as fronted by Adam Lambert.  This is a huge deal for me because I'm fairly sure I'm going to be well out of my comfort zone at a festival that's predicting to attract 120,000 people.  But oh well...  Things like this only happen once.  I'm not really a festival type person and well...  it's only my desire to see Adam (and a little help from the buttkicking that Ara gave me) that's persuaded to click the purchase button.

Work has turned interesting with a side of frustrating and I'm quite wishing to slam some developers heads into walls.  If you're building a product, possibly you should make it work before you start putting customers live on it, yes?  *sigh* Corporate bureaucracy for the lose?  But upside, I'm driving a hell of a lot less these days.

The first time that Adam hit the streets of the New York City Hypodrome, some asshole had pulled a gun on him. It made the kid's gun look like a toy and the street punk had run a city mile.

It's just north of 29k words and I actually quite like it.  There's a little bit of a hint regarding the outcome of this year's Kradam Big Bang in the last chapter.  Now I just have to edit it, clean it up, get my beta(s) to go over it with a fine tooth comb and then post it when it's due.  But I think this is the first time that I'm not rushing the deadline.
deannawol: (Every Story Has An Ending - Rikkustears)
Okay, so it might have been a little ambitious to try to finish my Pirates/History Big Bang before the end of January, but by my estimation, I'm going to be finished it by the end of this week.  That still gives me loads of buffer time to polish before the due date of March 1st.  This may be the first time that I've managed to finish a Big Bang before the due date...

Now, if only I didn't have two more Big Bangs to write before May-July.
deannawol: (brokenicon - calm before the storm)
For better or worse, I signed up to do some more Big Bangs.

At the moment, it's looking like there's going to be two Big Bangs for the Kradam Big Bang challenge, but I'm not going to be starting those until I'm finished the one that I'm working on now.

Back in March last year, I signed up to do the History Big Bang. 10,000 words in a year. That's totally doable, right? Yeah... I finally started it while I was on my Christmas holidays. So far, I'm not doing too badly. I'm over 10,000 words at the moment and I'm about half way through-ish and I'm aiming to get it finished by the end of January. It's a side story to last years Kradam Big Bang story, The Highest of Seas, The Lowest of Men.

Tails of the Captain’s Daughter

The worth of a man is in his ability to survive.

Lieutenant Bradley Bell is heir to a proud family tradition of loyal service in the British Navy with more salt-water than blood in his veins. Unfortunately the Navy proves to be no place for a free spirit with wits as sharp as his blade. Trapped on a ship with a sadistic Captain and a corrupt Marine Major, Brad finds himself eager for a new career.

The villainous pirate Captain Adam Lambert earnt his title with cunning and ruthless determination, and more than a small amount of luck. He has a keen eye for treasure but when Fate brings him a wounded though fierce Lieutenant instead of riches and gold, will both their prayers be answered?

In short, it's the story of how Brad came to be on board The Madness.  But at the moment, I'm waiting for someone to claim the summary.  Claiming has been very slow, but that's always a problem with multi-fandom communities.  So, if you know people who might be willing to claim it, throw them the link?  Please?

After that, I'm going to be working on the second part of The Highest of Seas, The Lowest of Men.  It's time to get the boys back together and give them their happy-ever-after.  So far, I'm happy with what's coming out in terms of the story, but it's looking like it's going to be another long story.

And just for a little variation, Ara has managed to convince me that Silver Bullets and Circuitry needs a sequel.  *grin*  We've got a few ideas kicking around but we need to sit down and properly work out which of the many future stories for the boys we're going to tell.  It's going to be fun!

Argh...  Too many projects, too many self-imposed deadlines.

1. US Marshals Serial Fiction Project - Basically based in a futuristic setting, this storyline revolves around a fictional division of the US Marshals, the Cybernetic Division of Fugitive Retrieval, a squad who deals exclusively with cyberpsychos and brings them to justice.  This project kicked me in the teeth a little but it's back on track at the moment.  Now I'm just worrying that it's too dark.

2. Pirates Part Deux - The continuation of this year's solo Kradam Big Bang project.  I have a lot of ideas for this story and I'm currently plotting things out and starting to write things down.  There have been some new characters popping in and being awesome, so they'll have to be included as well as a little bit of swashbuckling and a lot of getting the boys back together.

3. Kink Big Bang Project - Still waiting for someone to claim this one.  It's Kradam and it's kink.  Adam is the Shadow Emperor, possibly best described as a darker version of Jareth from Labyrinth, and Kris is going to be a willing sacrifice all packaged up with the hope that his presentation ot the Shadow Emperor is enough to save Conway from the Darkness about to descend.  But you guys know me by now.  Nothing's going to be that simple...

I need people to talk me out of plotting a CyberNoire story that's decided to kick off inside my head.  I mean seriously, do I really need another project?
deannawol: (Eyes: Leaking)
So, I think I'm mostly recovered from the Kradam Big Bang season.  But now I've got three projects vying for brain space.  And I thought I'd leave it up to you guys.  The three projects are:

1.  The next part of Pirates.  This would be the continuation of The Highest of Seas, The Lowest of Men.  Kris and Adam have been seperated through circumstances.  Now Kris, back with the British Navy must go through a court-martial where his fate will be decided.  Will he be bound to the Navy or will he be free to return to Adam?  Will Adam come to Charles Towne and reclaim his man?

2. A Kink Big Bang.  Adam is the Shadow Emperor and Kris is his willing sacrifice, offered to the Emperor to save the city of Conway, AK.  Kris feels a pull to Adam but will he be strong enough to survive the decadance of the Shadow Court?  This is going to be kink heavy and quite dark and honestly, it's going to be one heck of challenge.  I haven't written serious kink for quite a while.  Should I just suck it up and try anyway?

3. A US Marshals AU.  Kris is the team lead, Adam is his second in command.  They work for C-Div, the Cybernetic Division of Fugitival Retrieval.   Set in a Cyberpunk world, they have to deal with the lowest cyberscum of the city and still make it back in one piece to file the paperwork.

So which should I go for?  Should I give into insanity and write all three?  Argh!  Decisions, decisions...
deannawol: (Kris Allen - Music)
Damnit all to Hell...  I did not need another Kradam tribble.

I have enough to write as it is.

I've signed up for kink_bigbang again this year and planning on writing something with a heck of a lot more porny than anything I've written in quite a while: Adam as the Shadow Emperor and Kris as the sacrifice given to him to save the world.  I say planning because the writing hasn't started yet.  Being at home in Ireland is not condusive to writing.

Then, I have the second part of The Highest of Seas, The Lowest of Men to write.  Good news, I know what's going to happen in it.  Bad news, I havent' started it yet.  But It should be fairly okay once I get started.  I really enjoyed writing my pirate story and doing the research for it.  And well, I have a plan for a small spin off for the verse as well.

But yes, now I have a tribble for a US Marshals AU where Kris is the team leader and Adam is his second.  Guns, sleek black body armour, the works.  Someone slap me and tell me that I have enough on that I shouldn't even contemplate doing the sheer mountain of research this would take, let alone write it...

Ganked from [personal profile] akavertigo and [personal profile] arasigyrn :

"Pick one of my fics, and I'll give you three details that didn't make it into the fic. Background canon, deleted scenes, or a look into the future. My choice, but if you have a specific question you can ask it in your request."

Go nuts! :)

Summary: It's his dream job; a chance at revenge and a payoff that will buy him the life he always wanted in one once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Adam 'Silverfyre' Lambert knows he's the best merc money can buy but for this job, he's going to need the very best systems-hacker/datarunner in the game. Once upon a time, Kris Allen wasn't afraid of anything. That was then, this is now and Kris has resigned himself to a quiet, discreet life on the right side of the law. He thinks he's buried his past; right up until a big bad merc calling himself 'Silverfyre' comes crashing into his life. He wants Kris' help and he just won't take no for an answer.

One last job and they never have to see each other again.

They've just got to last that long...

Author Notes: We'd love to thank a really good friend, Tacitus for all his help in getting this right. He asked questions and picked up the logic problems so that we could fix this and make it something that we hope you're going to like reading. we'd also like to thank [ profile] chosenfire28 for her artwork. Go check out her post and leave some feedback for her!

This story is set in a cyberpunk world. A world of computers and circuitry and built in cyberware. Morals are tricky things that most people don't bother with. Money rules the world and some of the more unscrupulous will do anything for a quick buck. It's harsh, it's vicious, it's cyberpunk. Think BladeRunner, think Matrix, think RepoMen... This is a world of our own creation but it pulls a lot from the principles shown in those movies. We hope you'll enjoy it.

Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, as well as the various others in this story, are real people and we've have taken extreme artistic liberty with their characters. No profit is being made from this work.
