Start off on a good note...
Jul. 12th, 2005 09:09 amGood Morning to
slovobooks and
ephiriel who waved to me from the back of a 40D bus while I was on my way to work this morning.
omegar already knows this but last night, I got a series of text messages from someone who I don't know. I found this odd, but laughed the first one off as a wrong number or some such. So I texted back who is this and got a mysterious bullshit answer. Asked where he got my number and he wouldn't tell me. This made me very worried. It took about an hour to actually get the answer out of him. My phone number had been forwarded around in an email to god knows how many people. He claims he deleted the email but I don't know. This whole thing has me slightly on edge. If someone else texts me who I don't know, I'm just going to the guards and then to meteor to change my number!

Date: 2005-07-12 04:53 pm (UTC)1) Having their number is bugger all use - there's very little the law or the phone services can do. They can't stop a number for calling or texting another number, the technology just hasn't been implemented.
2) The e-mail story is more then likely a lie. Sorry to say this, but if an e-mail like that does go out, with any hint at spamming or hastling the owner, you're far more likely to receive lots of calls from different numbers, as peopel "go with the flow" and call once.
No, this is more likely someone you know vaguely, who has gotten a hold of your number, knows who you are, and is having fun at your expense, or alternatively it's just a random number hastle who's bluffing about knowing things about you. In this case, it was replying which got them interested - it's not fun if they can't get a rise out of you.
Best advice, if you don't want to change your number, is to just put up with it and delete the messages without reading them (which are only going to repeat the same things, or get more insulting) and hope they loose interest in the short term.
