Another Update and Thanks...
Sep. 11th, 2006 12:01 pmSo back from Cavan and back at work this morning. Clocked up about 200 miles over the weekend and can't feel my right knee but it went much better than I thought it would. I kinda took over when I went home and kept Mum busy doing little things so that her mind was off Dad and the fact that he was in hospital. She's doing better, just worried that she's going to dwell on it now I'm back in Maynooth.
Dad managed to astound the doctors and nurses by getting given digoxin and warfarin to thin the blood and lower his heart rate and having his heart speed up. He managed to top out at 167 before dropping rapidly to 56 and then bouncing up to 156 a minute or two later. They were monitoring him pretty closely. He, however, being back on form, declared that he was racing the guy in the next bed who was having the same problem. He's also taken to teasing the nurses and joking around with them. If anything he's relieved that he's inside. He's got his appetite back and has mostly lost the light headedness.
We live in a small rural community in the bigger urban community of Virginia so we have good neighbours who drop in for a chat and a cup of tea. They've been wonderful for Mum and great at just dropping in for a chat a couple of times a day and they all have my number so if anything goes wrong, they'll let me know. They also confided that he looked absolutely terrible last week and the week before, and that he was "fading fast". So all things considered, hospital is a very, very good thing. He's happy to be in there. Consultant (just back from holiday) is doing his rounds tomorrow so he won't be out of there before then, but nurses think that he's going to be in longer until he's stabilized for a few days. He's still up around 100 or so.
Then in 4 - 6 weeks (depending on how he responds to the Warfarin) they are going to stop his heart and restart it. *ponders* Technically they are giving him rat poison and going to kill him, all to make him better. Right, Bon, off that train of thought or you're going to be as neurotic as you were on Thursday/Friday.
But, before I forget... Thank you all for your best wishes. It meant a lot. *hugs to everyone*

Date: 2006-09-11 01:56 pm (UTC)A 2ft wall?! Thought you were going to say that he'd been biking again and is missing part of his face or something... Could be worse, a neighbour of mine did the same but landed with his neck on a flowerpot and tore open his trachea. So all things considered, he's just in a cast! ^_^
But good natured teasing will have to ensue!!
