Spent the weekend down in Carlow with [profile] omegar, [personal profile] gingereejit and a friend of Omegar's.  We sat down, watched DVD's, the 10 Commandments of Rock with Alice Cooper and basically had a nice chilled out time.  Came back last night and watched Hogfather.  On the whole I have to say that I like it.  Although it does have a few problems, it's a good story and calendar appropriate.

Recently, I've been reading Ex Machina a lot and really liking it, not so much as a system but more as a series of complete settings.  I have a feeling that it's going to pop up in the next few scenarios that I'm writing.  There are four complete settings varying in time-line from about 10 years in the future to centuries in the future.  It's remarkable how much information is contained about each setting, including the often overlooked (and for good reason) public opinions on relationship, education systems, personal interactions and religion.  The setting I like the most has to be Daedalus (the 5-10 years from now future).  There are some rather good ideas on population control and government involvement in the setting but I'm not going to go into them here until I work out what I'm going to do with it.

Reading Karen Marie Moning at the moment, and needless to say they are a rather pedestrian series of books.  Basic romance layout, with a supernatural twist.  Through a series of events, the Fey bring a woman from 21st century America back in time to Middle Ages and just after Scotland.  They meet, fall in love - after initial fear/distaste - and end up getting married.  Woman then chooses to stay in the more simple time with the Scotsman.  That's the basic plot, but unlike Kinley MacGregor's take on the Scots, Moning puts a lot of thought into reactions to being dumped back in time - the differences in mattresses, types of dress, the disadvantage of only having one pair of bra and panties with you.  Her heroines are strong independent women with real feelings who are delightfully written.  Her men are part barbarian, part civilized, completely undone at the sight of a woman crying heroes.  Everything you would look for in a romance novel.  And she hasn't once had her heroines ask about what's under the kilt!  ^_^

Finished work for the year on Friday and looking forward to it, although I'm a little worried about how I'm going to get my parent's present home... I'm not sure it's going to fit in the back.  I know if I take it out of the box it will, but I don't really want to.  Kind of removes the surprise aspect of present giving.  Apparently the Christmas cards I sent out are in the process of arriving, a fact I am grateful for, seeing as I wasn't 100% sure that the postbox I put them in has a regular pickup time.  And of course, I kinda forgot to put the airmail stickers on some of the first ones I sent out.  Ah well!  If they get there, they get there.  If they don't, I'm sorry!
