So, my various romps through the internets provided me with an interesting piece of news.  Well, okay, I kinda knew it already, I just didn't know that it was actually out yet.  Legend of the Seeker is based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series.  Well, it's supposed to be.  They've got the characters, the countries, the basic premise and that's about it.  I've just finished watching the season opener and well, the amount of times that I've shouted at the screen is higher for this one and a half hour show than it has been for any other show.

Okay, so I did recently re-read the books, so the story is fresh in my mind, but they've just run rough-shod over some of the core foundations of the series, and especially the first book.

Richard's father starts the show alive and well.  I can deal with that, all the better to send Richard off the deep end emotionally.

There are no such things as Quads in this, it just happens to be that four soldiers go thru the boundary after Kahlen.  And of course, the most annoying thing is that she and Richard didn't manage to kill all four men on the Bluff this time, there was one left alive.

But this is where it gets a bit ropey.  Kahlen is the possessor of the Book of Counted Shadows - remember, the book that George had Richard memorise since he was a little boy and then burned when he could write it out without mistake multiple times?  And in the show, the book is burned before Richard can memorise it, so how the heck are they going to deal with the Boxes of Orden?

Richard has only vague knowledge of Zedd, as that crazy old man who lives in the woods.  He is not the pseudo-fatherly figure who has taught Richard all he knows about the woods and the various plants.  Meanwhile, Kahlen knows Zedds entire name.  No wizardly webs this time around.

Richard finds out from the beginning what a confessor is, which takes away most of the sexual tension that was evident in the books.

Chase's men aren't loyal to him at all, but rather to Michael who is being his usual Michael-y self.

Another thing about the show that I'm not keen on is actually Richard.  He's a little too young, a little too naive.  Hell, he looks about 18.  He doesn't have the confidence to be a woods guide let alone the seeker.

The sheer amount of things that have changed in that hour and a half is staggering.  The episode ends with Kahlen, Richard and Zedd on the other side of the boundary together planning to deal with Darken Rahl.  Which is a little counter to the story, as Zedd should still be unconscious with Adie and Kahlen and Richard should be on their way to the Mud People to find the Boxes of Orden...  They can't be going to leave them out completely, can they?

I'd be curious to see what others have to say about this show...

Incidentally, I'm predicting that Bruce Campbell will show up in it at some point.  It's produced by the same people that did Hercules and Xena, and Ted Raimi (Joxer the Mighty) has already shown his face in the show.

Apparently Lucy Lawless is already set to appear.

I think that they are leaving the boxes of Orden out of this. in fact the show seems to be based just on the first box. they will probably spend a couple of seasons trying to kill Lord Rahl, and when they do that will be the end of the show.

Well, Denna is only episode 6 or 7, there's a fair amount of plot to skip over before that...

My first reaction when I read that there was a series based on the Sword of Truth series was to cheer out loud. After having read through the spoilers however, I'm not even sure I want to see this show. I'm currently reading through the books (stuck somewhere halfway in book five though, but hoping to get the real books and not only the ebooks and then being able to continue).

Keep us posted about the next episodes?

I say that the Mud People should be in the show because that is how Rahl is brought back in book two, and when Kahlan and Richard get married. this is why I hate disney. they screw up the best books when adapted to movie or show format.

Terry Goodkind needs to take more control when he approves the scripts for each frieking episode.
