Evening was crawling up the skies and Jared was starting to yawn despite his earlier nap. Megan was asleep beside him with Sam snoozing in the back. He'd tried the radio stations but this far out, there was nothing but static and the silence was making him sleepy. He was just starting to nod off when he saw a cloud of dust in the rear view mirror, against the fading night sky. He snapped awake, adrenaline pumping through his system. Reaching over, he shook Megan. She whacked his hand angrily.
"Quit it!"
"Megan, wake up, we got company."
The words were enough to snap both women to full wakefulness.
"What we got, Jay?" Sam asked from the back seat, bringing her shotgun up and wiggling until she could see out the back window.
"Not sure yet, Sam, it's still at a distance. Could be nothing but I'm gonna put my foot down just in case." Jared glanced at the rearview mirror again, then down at the seat. Dammit, where'd he put the goddamn gun?
"Good plan," Sam commended. "Megan honey, you still got that gun that Josh was kind enough to give you?"
"Yeah, it's in my backpack," the girl confirmed.
"Well, you go take it out honey and make sure it's loaded. Not particularly fond of you having to use it but might not have too much of a choice," Sam said, lips pinched as she watched the dust cloud in the distance.
Jared eased the car up to an even hundred. It shook and moaned in protest but he kept his foot to the floor. He had no idea how close their company was but if there was a way to get out of their range, then Jared was willing to take it. He shifted his grip on the wheel, wishing again for his gun. Shooting and driving was probably borderline suicidal but he'd feel better with a gun in hand.
"Not sure, Jay, but I think that they're gaining on us," Sam's voice was low enough that it was almost lost in the rumble bump of the road.
"Shit, I can't make this heap go faster, Sam, foot's to the floor as it is. Unless we get a hill, I'm not going to get past one ten," Jared grumbled. "I'll keep trying but I can't promise anything. Might be good if you guys got ready to fight for it. Hey Munchkin, can you grab my gun out of the rucksack?"
Megan squirmed around and drew the heavy rucksack into her lap before opening it and rummaging around for the massive Colt. Her hand closed around the barrel and she drew it out. She checked the gun over. Josh must have shown that earlier, cause he knew that JD had never let a gun near his little sister. Jared had to admit that Josh had been a hell of a teacher as she clicked the magazine home again, cocking the gun to load the first bullet.
"It's good to go, Jay," she said.
Jared smirked at the casual attitude, "Just put it on the seat beside me. If we need to stop or pull over, I'll be ready."
Megan glanced at the side mirror, watching the growing cloud, "You sure that they're following us?"
"No, baby, but we gotta be ready just in case," Sam answered, saving Jared from doing it.
Megan squared herself and held the gun tightly in her hands. It was a beautiful modified Sig, with a handle inlaid with mother of pearl and sixteen bullet magazine. Jared didn't know how Josh had parted with it, it was worth more than any standard street gun and probably had memories attached to it. Why else would a street merc carry around what looked like a woman's gun?
Jared forced the thoughts aside, and focused on the suburban, cajoling it under her breath for just a little extra speed, but it was useless. The car, and he could just about make out that it was a car now, dark or black under the dust, was gaining fast. Another couple of minutes and they'd be right on him. Jared's hand went to the gun beside him, getting ready to bring it to bear. There was no where else he could go, no side roads or alleyways, just miles of open desert. The black car was almost on them when Jared spun the wheel, throwing the car off the road and onto the hard packed dirt and sand. He could hear JD's voice in the back of his head, his calm instructions reminding Jared that he needed to keep control. Evasive driving one-oh-one, put more corners between you and them than they can over come.
"Sam, Megan, get ready. There isn't any cover so all they need to do is pull close enough to get a shot off. Might be best to duck down in the seat, make them think that there's only one of us until they're close enough to hit," Jared suggested.
Sam skooched down in her seat while Megan hunkered down in the foot well, pushing Jared's bag up onto the seat to give herself some room. Jared checked both of them to make sure that they were okay before he started ducking and dodging in their metal cage, praying that he didn't hit a rut or a pothole or something that would flip the car and kill them all. The black car kept pace with them easily, moving to pull along side, but Jared didn't look over, just spun tighter loops trying to get beside them. He expected gunfire to cut into them at any second. Hell they may be firing already for all he knew given that he couldn't hear anything over the noise of the engine screaming in protest. He was already pushing the suburban well past it's tolerance.
In a swift move, the black car slammed to a stop straight in their path. Jared slammed on the brakes without thinking. Instinct overriding common sense. But he was stopped before he realized.
"Shit," he cursed. "Shit! They got us, get ready!"
Jared's hand clenched around the Colt as he brought it up. He still didn't know if he could actually kill someone but screw it, a few bad dreams was worth it if they got away from this alive and mostly unhurt. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. When he opened them, he sighted on the driver's seat window, trying to make out whoever it was behind the dusty glass. Then the door opened. Jared tightened his grip on the trigger. He was aware that he'd be shooting through glass but putting down the window would take seconds that they didn't have. He sighted again, targeting the guy right between sparkling green eyes.
Green?
Jared dropped the Colt down as he looked at the man climbing out of the dust coated car. Flinging open the door of the suburban, Jared unfolded himself as he got out of the car.
"Jensen? The fuck?" Jared asked. "I could have shot you, was all ready to."
Jensen's mouth quirked up at the corner, amusement playing across his eyes, "Wouldn't be the first time someone's pointed a gun at me and doubt it'll be the last."
"So what the fuck are you doing out here? Thought we had an agreement, you go your way back to your family and we go find a nice little town to settle down in," Jared's voice was toxic. "Not sure what part of that includes tracking us down and scaring the fucking crap out of us!"
“I got me a problem, Jay,” Jensen said, leaning back against his car, “I don’t do casual very well. Never really learned how to do the hump and dump, I guess. Sorry.”
Jared's brow furrowed; he didn't follow and it was getting really hard to hang to his righteous anger with Jensen right there, all rumpled hair and shy smile. God save him from adorable mercenaries.
"Took me a while to put it all together," Jensen continued, still not looking directly at Jared as he scuffed the dust. "Yeah, make all the jokes you want about me being a little slow on the uptake. Truth is that I can be a little dumb at times when it comes to things like this."
"You planning on explaining yourself any time soon?" Jared asked.
"The damned fool shouldn't have walked out on you the way he did," Josh interrupted, stepping out from the passenger seat. "Any idiot could see that you two got some sort of mojo working between you. But Jen talked himself into letting you wander off on your own cause that's what the original plan was and ya'll never talked about anything else."
"Yeah, and someone here pointed out a couple a home truths," Jensen added, thumping Josh affectionately.
"Yeah? Like what?" Jared asked, leaning back against his own car.
"Like we just sent you out into the wilderness with an injured lady who just had major surgery a day ago, and a girl who never fired a gun for real and nothing else," Jensen said, voice low.
"Hey!" came Megan's voice from the foot well.
"There might be a little too much soldier still left in me," Jensen shrugged, "Not always great on deviating from the plans I set."
"Yeah, so I thumped him over the back of the head a few times and it seemed to knock some sense into him," Josh grinned, "I mean, the threat of Momma alone was enough to get him to turn around."
"Momma?" Jared asked.
"Yeah, our Momma prides herself on raising us right. If she found out that we sent Miss Ferris off to fend for herself, well, she'd skin the pair of us," Jensen shivered.
"And that'd just be the start of it," Josh added.
Jensen pushed off the car, walking towards Jared, "Can I talk to you for a minute, just the two of us?"
Jared hesitated but Jensen looked vulnerable and Jared wasn't quite mad enough to air their dirty laundry in front of Jensen's big brother and his own little sister, "Sure."
Jensen walked past him and the car until they were far enough away that the others wouldn't hear them. Jared followed, eyes straying south as he watched Jensen move. Damn but the man had a fine ass. Jensen stopped by a few scrubby bushes and took a deep breath before turning to face Jared.
"Look, I'm sorry for this morning. I shouldn't have done that, or at least, I should have talked to you. I had a great time last night, really good, and I'd love to do it again sometime, but I'll understand if you think I'm an ass and want nothing to do with me," Jensen shrugged again, "I should have realized when you were beating up the vending machine. But no matter whether you do wanna try this whole thing again or not, we're taking you back to the family. Stay a while, until Miss Ferris is back on her feet at least. We'll teach you everything you need to know about the wilds. Well, everything bar driving cause damn, you got that covered. Gave me a hell of a job to catch you."
Jared kicked at the ground with a shoe, flushed with pride at the genuine admiration in Jensen's voice. His anger was now melting into a little puddle of warmth in his stomach. Jensen -- hot, smart, gorgeous Jensen -- was asking him for a second chance. Jared thought about, twisting Jensen's words everyway he could. He owed Jensen the truth.
"Okay," Jared finally agreed.
"Okay? To which parts?" Jensen asked carefully.
"To all of it, I guess," Jared hunched his shoulders forward a little. "But I got something to say on the 'us' thing."
"Yeah?"
"This morning, I was wrong to react like I did, but part of that was me. I didn't talk to you before going off and making assumptions just ‘cause the sex was great."
"Just great?" Jensen smirked, "I'd class it as fantastic."
Jared glared at the mercenary, "But if we do this, we give it a proper chance, okay?"
"What do you mean a proper chance?" Jensen asked.
"Well, we do the whole nine yards thing. We gotta talk and occasionally do things together that don't involve nudity. Ya know, dinner or vids or something," Jared said, looking down. He didn't want to see Jensen's face during this, just in case. "We already know that the sex works well, but I think that maybe we could be more than that. Not sure why but I'd like to try it, see how it pans out, yeah?"
Jensen seemed to consider it for a moment then nodded, "Sounds good. It's a take it easy, see where it goes thing."
"Yeah."
"I can do that. Any other requirements?"
"Don't think so, but if I think of any, I'll let you know!"
Jensen laughed, shuffling closer, "You do that, Jared."
"So that's it..." Jared's voice dropped, his gaze flickering between the ground and Jensen's eyes, "I guess I got me a boyfriend now."
"A boyfriend..." Jensen tried out the word, "Yeah, guess you do."
"Then... We should probably..." Jared's gaze flickered to Jensen's lips and stayed there.
"Definitely," Jensen's voice was little more than a whisper as Jared closed the distance.
The kiss was slow; both of them wanting so damn bad but neither of them confident enough to push. Jensen tasted of salt and sweat and dry desert heat. Jared's hand cupped Jensen's cheek, holding him in place. Jensen's hand tangled in Jared's hair, pulling him closer as the kiss deepened and grew hotter. Jared could quite happily have spent the rest of the night kissing Jensen senseless and counted it a night well spent. When they finally broke the kiss, both boys were breathless and flushed.
Wolf-whistles greeted them as they walked back to the cars, fingers intertwined as they held hands.
"You boys got everything sorted then?" Sam asked, grinning at them.
"Yup," Jared couldn't keep the smile from his face.
"'Bout time," the older woman threw back before settling herself on the seat. "Josh, grab the keys from Jared and let’s start back towards your family."
"Yes ma'am," Josh saluted and held out a hand for the keys.
Jared tossed them over, smiling and walked over to the Impala, climbing in the passenger side. Jensen slid in a moment later and the car roared to life. They were back on the road in minutes and headed in the opposite direction. Jared started to talk, telling Jensen about the clubs and the nightlife he'd left behind. Jensen listened and asked questions. When the subject changed to family and Jared started to choke up, Jensen picked up the conversation; talking about his family and telling him about the pranks he and Josh pulled on everyone around them. The conversation moved easily to things like music, films, even down to favorite food types. Anything and everything that popped into their heads.
