Jared woke with a jerk as Jensen tapped him on the arm, "I'm up, I'm up!"
"Good to know," Jensen pushed up his shades and smiled, green eyes twinkling.
Looking around, Jared knuckled the sleep from his eyes. They were in the middle of nowhere as far as he could tell. Nothing but sand punctuated with the occasional cactus, ‘cept for the blue suburban beside them.
"Where are we?" he asked as he dragged himself up in his seat.
"We're at the crossroads, Jay. This is where we gotta split."
Jensen sounded a little sad at the prospect but Jared just dismissed it. The man had made himself perfectly clear earlier. He was going one way and Jared and his family were going another.
"Okay, I'll just pull my shit out of the back of the car and we'll be out of your way."
"Jay..." Jensen started, his mouth opening and closing as he discarded words. Eventually, he sighed and continued, "I left a little something in your rucksack. It's the money that Kane paid us to off you and your sister. Don't feel right keeping it. And it'll help you get a good start wherever you go."
"But what about...?" Jared asked.
"We got paid to kidnap you guys and get you out of the towers. We did that job right enough, so we got our own hunk of change to live on, don't you worry," Jensen tapped his back pocket.
Jared said nothing, just staring at the mercenary. It took him a couple of minutes to get his thoughts into order but when he did, his tone of voice was anything but calm, "I don't get you, I really don't. You take jobs for money, but then you pimp out for counter jobs and get paid twice." Jared gestured wildly.
Jensen looked down, studying his hand on the wheel.
"Fair enough, I can get that, but you pull a good Samaritan job and get us out of there, and don't think I'm not grateful, cause I am." He swallowed thinking of Sam, bleeding into her gut and Meg lying still and pale on the bed. "Really grateful for that. Thank you for that, definitely. And yeah, I know it's cause you got your own reasons for hating Kane. Don't have a problem with any of that.”
Jensen opened his mouth to say something but Jared cut him off.
“But then… Then you sleep with me after giving your brother the cold shoulder for telling me that you're available. We have an amazing night, morning, whatever, and then you don't want to know in the morning. So I put you down as a pure merc, only in it for the money and the ass.”
“Jay it wasn’t like…”
“Well, it was a bonus, yeah? And I'm okay with that!” Jared shrugged.
Truth was that he wasn’t. He wouldn’t be ranting like this if he was. But damned if he was going to let Jensen know that, “But then you turn around and do this..." Jared sighed, "I don't get it. I don't get you. Well, screw it, I don't care. You hear me? I fucking give up. You got your road and I got mine and never the twain shall meet, yeah? So thanks for saving my life, thanks for the fuck and have a fucking awesome life, Jensen.”
Without giving Jensen a chance to respond, Jared climbed out of the car and grabbed his bag from the back seat. He slammed the door behind him and made his way to the other car where Josh held out the keys for him.
"Thanks for everything, Josh," Jared said, reaching out to shake the other man's hand.
"Have a good trip," Josh wished them well, "And take care of them. Ya got two good ladies there, lethal but good."
Jared forced a smile, "Yeah, that's about right." He stopped, forcing himself to relax slightly, "Thanks for all the help, I mean it. And thanks for packing the car."
"No problem," Josh replied.
"Well, we better get on the road, don't know how far we gotta go and I wanna get a good distance between us and the city before dark," Jared said, glancing at the sinking sun and checking his internal clock.
"Good plan," Josh agreed, leaning down to look in the window, "And you girls behave yourself for Jared here, won't ya?"
"Of course, Josh," Megan replied sweetly.
"Ah crap, you're in for it now, Jay, little sisters going quiet is never a good sign. Watch your back," Josh joked. "Drive safe, man, and if you see something you don't know what it is, floor it. If that doesn't work, shoot it. Best bit of advice I can give you!"
Jared nodded, "Will do, man, thanks."
Josh shuffled his feet and finally backed away from the car. Jared folded himself into the drivers seat and pushed the key into the starter and turned it. The engine roared into life and Jared took off. Flicking a glance in the rear view mirror, he could see Josh and Jensen standing by the Impala watching him go. Taking a deep breath, he focused on the road in front of him and pushed down a little harder on the accelerator.
Megan leaned in after a few minutes and asked, voice low, "You okay, Jay?"
Jared looked down at her, and forced a smile, "Got my two favorite girls with me and nothing but the open road, I couldn't be better."
"Yeah, pull the other one and monkeys will fly outta my butt!" Meg had her hands on her hips and was giving him the 'my brother is a moron' look she'd perfected at thirteen.
"Really?" Jared asked, his eyes flicking from the road to Megan and back again, "I'll have to try that later. Always wanted a flying monkey!"
She rolled her eyes at that, but dropped the subject. Jared was grateful. He watched the road in front, letting his eyes search out any potential problems, but there was nothing but sand out there. He sat back and let himself settle into driving. It was going to be a rough ride, but they'd do it and come out the other side better and stronger, all they needed to do was find somewhere to put down roots.
