Kelley Armstrong Homepage

Okay, now that the link is out of the way. This is an author who writes excellent horror type fiction, based around werewolves, witches, sorcerers, demons, in a modern day setting. She has strong female leads who are actually solid and well rounded characters. So, now that that is out of the way.

Discovered, (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] alarielle) that she has done more work, e-serials based around one of the other characters. A male character, Clay (werewolf). The first of these e-serials, Savage, was good towards the end but the start of it was very femininely written. It was hard to distinguish that it was a guy she was writing about. Don't ask why that was the observation but it was.

There were one or two other things that rubbed me up the wrong way.
1) Clays first change (at least 10 years younger than the hereditory werewolfs) came off as too easy compared to Elena's change in Bitten. Is it harder for girls than guys, does age make the difference? Never explained really!
2) Clay didn't have any real emotional depth. Okay, so he's lived in the bayou for a year as part animal part boy and had no control over his changes but it could have been slightly better written.

However, that said... I loved Savage and Ascention (just finished that one at work), looking forward to starting Beginnings tonight. Ascension is a much better portrayal of Clay, in my opinion. Once she warmed to him as a character, it came out wonderfully. The gerbil incident, scaring the mutts with a very carefully thought out plan. Malcolm was a very interesting character as well. He fitted in perfectly... However, Jeremy is still as vague a character as ever.

*grin* Once I'm finished the parts of beginnings that are there, I shall be reading Demonology 101 to get background for the plot and then sitting down to figure out demons and how to be evil to players using them. :) Yet again, [livejournal.com profile] alarielle will know what I'm on about!

I think that might have been deliberate. Think about it, Clay's grown up as a werewolf and kids are as a rule more resilient than adults. Plus, from what I've seen Clay is a good deal less emotionally vunerable than Elena.

I think it's more a "she was still getting to grips to writing the character and didn't wanna get bogged down" sorta thing

A liddle from Column A, a liddle from Column B. =)

Might also be that she hadn't/hasn't decided yet - the change has always been shown through Elena's eyes. Males may have survived better as werewolves because they adapt better? =)

I'm playing Devil's Advocate, btw. =)

And may I just say: ARGH!!!!!

What a point to stop the last chapter of Beginnings on... And wow, Nick is coming off prized bastard compared to Logan.

But I do see what you mean about the whole Clay side of the relationship

=) The next chapter goes up fairly soon. She's gonna try finishing before the new year.

Cool ... I doubt she has much to go with it ...

It's at 182 pages which makes it the longest so far... All she has to do is let Elena meet Jeremy and reactions and Clay kicked out ... Maybe a little more after that but that's it.
