Sarah Jane Adventures
Jan. 1st, 2007 05:44 pmI have to say that I wasn't overly impressed by the pilot episode of "The Sarah Jane Adventures". Personal opinion is that it's little more than a hat-tip to the old fans but will probably suffer from the same format issues that plague the new Doctor Who and Torchwood. I know that Torchwood is the "adult" side of Doctor Who. Doctor Who is the one for every member of the family. So is Sarah Jane aimed at children? At least, that's how it seemed to me. Maybe it was just that the format was very reminiscent of all those young teen shows shown on CBBC. You know the ones, The Queen's Nose, Woof, etc. But maybe it's just because of the participation of the wee teenage girl.
The storyline was a bit pedantic. She lacks the charisma of the Doctor and the influence he has. The gadgets were a nice touch, as was the alien that was very reminiscent of one recently in Torchwood. However, the acting was a bit pants and the dialogue was at times just completely underwhelming. We're used to certain standards and I don't think it met any of them, but then I was completely unimpressed by the episode of Doctor Who featuring the return of Sarah Jane Smith. Hmm... One thought does occurs - She managed to nick quite a bit of stuff from the Doctor and other aliens.
ouches that I did like were the thoughts of Kelsey, especially in relation to Hollyoaks, to which I have a slight addiction I must admit. I also liked the "Archetype"'s reactions, completely unbelievable but fun none the less.
One other thought, Torchwood seems to know a lot about the Doctor and his assistants - so why haven't they recruited her? She's an interfering type, who it would seem, would be a good influence on the organisation, or at least as much as Gwen is. Investagative journalist who knows about the existence of aliens vs. The inexperienced but tenacious policewoman. Anyway, is it just me or is the CGI getting more and more dodgy? Ah well, I'd say 6 out of 10. Watchable but predictable. Potential for more, but a bit too melodramatic for my tastes. Rated about BBC's new Robin Hood, under Torchwood (due to lack of hot characters and the childish nature of the Sarah Jane Adventures) but very much below Doctor Who on the relative scale of things.
