My tenth birthday was definitely something to remember, no matter how much I want to forget it. It’s not everyday that your boss gives you a huge ass birthday cake. I’d been working for him nearly four years at that stage and been a good boy – or so he told me almost daily – and this was my special treat. I’d been looking forward to it for days, ever since I’d overheard the cook talking about it. How was I to know that such a momentous occasion was about to be overshadowed by me sprouting fur and trying to bite through the leg of the bouncer? He didn’t hold a grudge though, he’d apparently done the same on his first change – well not a bouncer but you get the picture. It was supposed to be a big day, I just had no idea how big.

Yet another night off. Talking to the lawyer only seemed to make things worse. Go to a bar, he said, enjoy yourself. Which is exactly what I’d be doing if I was back in the club with the eight odd people in the world that I know. Not including the temporary staff. We don’t really talk to them so they don’t count. Doesn’t really make sense to make friends with the kids who end up leaving when they can’t hack the basic truth behind the club. But I’ve come to discover a truth in my time off. I don’t like it out here. At least the club is safe. No one cares about my background there, or the fact that at least once a month I need to get furry. In fact, some people pay to watch. Out here, its constant monitoring of myself and others. Got to keep my eyes down so they don’t see the golden rings that came from spending too much time with four legs instead of two. It’s not so forgiving out here. Only two hours left and I can go back in. And believe me, I’m counting the minutes.

Human rights violation! That's what they said. What a load of crap! So what if he hadn't had a day off in the past 12 years? What the hell was he supposed to do with a day off. The club gave him everything he needed - a place to sleep, people to talk to, hot food and enough entertainment to last him several lifetimes. It wasn't like he could hang out with friends, everyone he knew was in the club while he was stuck out here. Alone. Walking up and down the street in front of the club. What? How else do you comply with your bosses advice of "Go for a walk" and "Don't go too far"? Anyway, it was all the new lawyer’s fault. Someone forgot to tell him the score. After all, how can there be a human rights violation when the person in question isn’t even human?
